The New York Mets Increase Pressure on the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card Race
MIAMI – Despite facing tough times, the Mets have had a good showing in Game 161.
In 2007, the day before the Mets suffered one of the most memorable losses in baseball history,
John Maine held the Marlins scoreless, allowing only one hit into the eighth inning, resulting in a decisive victory that gave them a temporary reprieve in the season.
The following year, Johan Santana, with a knee injury, pitched a three-hit shutout, achieving a similar effect.
However, on both occasions, the Mets failed to capitalize the next day and were eliminated from playoff contention.
Time will tell if this season ends similarly or differently.
On Saturday, Clay Holmes gave the Mets a crucial opportunity, delivering his best performance of the season in his final regular-season start.
Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Mets were in top form.
Holmes limited the Marlins to just one hit over six scoreless innings, leading his team to a 5-0 victory at LoanDepot Park.
“It was a game we had to win today,” Holmes said. “I went out there and gave it my all.”
This win ensured that Game 162 would be relevant for the Mets, who momentarily moved half a game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in the race for the final National League wild-card spot.
Cincinnati was scheduled to play later that day and needed to beat Milwaukee to maintain their position in the wild-card race.
If both teams finish tied, the Reds would advance to the playoffs thanks to their tiebreaker advantage.
Had the Mets succumbed to the Marlins, they would have opened the door to early elimination that very night. Instead, Holmes, along with Brooks Raley, Tyler Rogers, and Edwin Díaz, combined to allow only one hit, securing at least one more crucial game.
“That’s exactly the kind of performance we needed today,” said first baseman Pete Alonso.
Using his signature sinker, Holmes induced 11 outs on ground balls, retiring the first eight Marlins batters in a row before escaping a jam in the third inning with another ground ball.
This sparked a streak of six consecutive outs for Holmes, who displayed such efficiency that manager Carlos Mendoza decided to keep him in the game.
When Holmes stranded two runners in the fifth inning, Mendoza gave him the sixth. Holmes responded with three more ground balls.
“That’s what I do when I’m really feeling good,” Holmes said, referring to his sinker. “These games bring out that intensity.
I got a lot of ground balls, and the defense made some great plays behind me.”
By the seventh inning, Mendoza felt confident enough to turn to his bullpen, even though Holmes had thrown only 78 pitches.
Brooks Raley, Tyler Rogers, and Edwin Díaz finished the job, securing a much-needed victory for the Mets.
“This was a must-win game,” Holmes said.
“Any time, whether it’s the World Series or the penultimate game of the regular season, those games have a lot of meaning.
You definitely feel it.”
“Going into the game, to be honest, it reminded me a little bit of last year [with the Yankees],
when we lost a World Series and how much I want to be a part of that, especially with this group here.
These games, these must-win games, bring some of that out. I was happy to go out there and give it my all tonight.”
Additionally, Pete Alonso contributed some offense early on, driving in a run with a double in the first inning and hitting his 38th home run in the third.
Jeff McNeil also contributed an RBI double for the Mets, who added two more runs in the ninth inning and are gearing up for another crucial game on Sunday, closing out their regular season.
All of the Mets’ pitchers, except for Holmes and Nolan McLean, will be available for that game, including starters Sean Manaea and David Peterson.
